What is the Observatory for the Greek Information Society?
The Observatory for the Greek Information Society is a non-profit organization placed under the supervision of the Ministry of Economy & Finance. The Observatory for the Greek IS was established by the Greek Law 3059/2002, while it became operational on November 2004 with the nomination of its Managing Director.
The mission of the Observatory for the Greek Information Society is to measure and evaluate the national progress made towards the Information Society, as well as to contribute to the accomplishment of the IS strategic goals on a national level.
The Observatory for the Greek Information Society constitutes the third pillar of the Operational Programme “Information Society” (OPIS) that together with the Secretariat for the IS OPIS Management Authority and the KtP SA company constitute the main mechanisms for the implementation of the OPIS in Greece.
What kind of services does the Observatory for the Greek Information Society provide?
The Observatory for the Greek Information Society aims at:
(1) providing information on the overall progress made towards the IS based on quantitative and qualitative data collected and on secondary analyses conducted. (2) providing consulting services and formulating recommendations to the public sector and local ICT market as regards the IS. (3) constituting a coordinating institution for policy making on critical issues for the IS by bringing together interested parties, social partners, specialists, etc. and by creating working groups.
What does ICTs stand for?
ICTs stand for Information and Communication Technologies. Examples of ICT's are ATM's for cash withdrawal and other banking services, mobile phones, teletext television, the Internet, e-Mail, broadband services, etc.
What does Information Society mean?
The term “Information Society” refers to a form of social and economic development where the acquisition, storage, processing, assessment, transmission and diffusion of information leads to the generation of knowledge and the fulfilment of needs of individuals and firms and thereby plays an important role in economic activity, the generation of wealth and the quality of life of citizens.
